Offering to Mother Earth

It is the gratitude to Nature for the different benefits that families obtain, such as the beginning of a new Andean year, the birth of a child, the construction of a home, the arrival of harvest time, the birth of animals, the beginning of the rainy season, etc. Especially in the Andean world, the pre-Columbian religiosity remains until today intact in ancestral rites that link man with nature, and in which the Earth takes great importance. Pachamama or Mother Earth, goddess of fertility, lives in the Ukhupacha or inner world, whose fruits she offers to men for their food. That is why, within the logic of Andean reciprocity, the comuneros retribute payments (also called pagapus or dispatches). The offering contains coca leaves, unworked silver, chicha, wine and certain seeds of the forest with symbolic and magical powers called huayruros. This same payment is made to the Apus, spirits of the ancestors who live within the hills. Coca, a sacred plant that serves as a mediator between the inside world (that of the Apus and the Pachamama) and the outside world (that of men), is present in the celebration.
