Offerings to Mother Nature

The Pachamama, or Mother Earth, goddess of fertility lives in Ukhupacha, or the inner earth, whose gifts provide mankind his sustenance.

For this purpose and within the philosophy of Andean reciprocity, the followers of this tradition give offerings, or pagos (also referred to as pagapus or despachos).  These offerings contain coca leaves, faux silver, chicha (Andean corn beer) wine and certain seeds from the jungle with symbolic powers and magic qualities called huayruros.

This same form of offering also applies to los Apus, spirits of the ancient times that live within the mountains.  Coca, the sacred plant that serves as mediator between the inner world (that of the Apus and the Earth Mother) and world of humankind, is present everywhere throughout the land.  You will find this important plant and potent symbol in various religious celebrations in the rural areas as well as within urban centers.
