What is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a medicinal plant which is used by 72 cultures in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. The word Ayahuasca comes from the quechua language and means “soul plant,” “death plant” or “vision plant”. This legendary entheogen is the most celebrated of Amazon region. It is used by shamans to cure illnesses and to communicate with the spirits. For the indigenous people it is a sacred medicine that can cure all illnesses, so that various shamans refer to it as the “cure-all”.
Ayahuasca has never been used casually or for recreational purposes in the above mentioned traditional societies. On the contrary, it is used in order to bring about a chemically induced state of trance for those who wish to embark on the “search for vision”.
Ayahuasca is a medicine plant which cleans body, emotions and spirit. After taking it normally it cleans physically the body by letting the person vomit and purge. That is why the natives of the Amazon region call it “the purge” when they refer to this drink.
“One cannot help but be impressed by the notable improvement in their attributed to the purging caused by the plant”, wrote an anecdotal report of the complete disappearance of certain types of cancer after only one or two session using Ayahuasca.
The rejuvenating effect of “the purge” explains the extraordinary health of those who use Ayahuasca, including even the oldest people.
Ayahuasca is unique because of its strong psychedelic effect, which is caused by the combination of at least two plants; the banisteriopsis caapi and the psychotria virdis or any other hallucinogen containing the alkaloid Dimetiltriptamine (DMT).
According to the indigenous folklore Ayahuasca is the fountain of knowledge and therefore the best way to reveal the mythological origins of life.
Effects of Ayahuasca
Experiences and effects of the medicine are very individual and depend from everybody. Some people have the sensation of being separated from their bodies and being catapulted into a strange area of perception. Others have visions; some are feeling the connection of everything. You can get to the origin of your personal or worlds existence and can see for example the creation of the universe, of mankind and the animals.
The plant can open the connection to yourself, to unconscious experiences of your past, fears or other emotions, you can work with and overcome them. It is a journey through time and space – through your personal and worldly time and space.
We are doing our Ayahuasca ceremonies in a nice and quiet area outside Cusco in the Maloca (ceremonial house) in the house of the Shaman Kush. We meet up around 7 pm at the Shaman Shop (Triunfo 393/107, Cusco, Peru) and drive together to the place.
Then you have a little time to get used to the place, go into yourself, to know the other participants and the Shaman(s). The ceremony starts by drinking a glass of the cooked juice of Ayahuasca. After 30-60 minutes you will feel the effect of the plant.
Ayahuasca brings unconscious processes out, with which you can work in the ceremony. Normally your perception changes, other effects can be that the emotions are coming out, that you have visions, or that you find old and forgotten experiences which you want to share and where you want individual help from the shaman.
On the physical side it can be that you feel sick and that you´d like to vomit or you have to clean your intestine. If this happens, it is part of your cleaning. In this moment the Ayahuasca is passing through the intestines like a liquid laxative of the soul, cleaning the entire body. You will get rid of all parasites, emotional blocks and feelings of resentment whose origin lies in your personal past.
During the ceremony there will be phases with shamanic chants and music which the shamans are using to connect with the spirits. Also there will be phases in silence where you can be by your own or to talk to the shaman. The effects of the plant will mostly hold on between 3 and 6 hours.
You’ll stay overnight at the maloca.
Many people feel the next day newborn and that something died at night. If you worked about deep psychological questions in the ceremony it can be that in the next time after the ceremony the healing-process is going on and that your consciousness about yourself changes.
In the early morning one of our lovely staff will take you back to the city.
Preparations before the ceremony
Before you are doing an Ayahuasca ceremony we recommend you to take care of what you eat. If you have a good preparation, the effect can be deeper or more giving.
The main recommendations are not eat red/heavy meats and fried food a week before and after, and stay alcohol free at the same time.
Three days before and after the ceremony it´s recommendable to use just moderate consumption of salt and sugar/honey.
Two days before you shouldn´t eat hot food, red pepper etc. One day before you shouldn´t consume fermented food, pickles, herring, anchovy’s, old cheese, etc.
The day of the ceremony is recommended to eat a simple vegetarian breakfast and lunch, avoid coffee, green or black tea, eggs and citrus fruits. Don´t eat after 3pm until the next day. After lunch just drink water or herbal tea.
Don´t take any drugs (marihuana, mushrooms, DMT, LSD etc.) weeks before the ceremonies.
Wear comfortable and warm clothes during the ceremony.
For your spirit and mind take time for yourself and do spiritual practices which help you to connect with your inner world the day of the ceremony or the days before. Spend time in peaceful environment, make a walk in nature, meditate etc. – engage in activities which help you to be more aware and present.
